Raytheon Co. (NYSE:RTN) | Competitors & Competition

Top Menu Background

Raytheon directly participates in most major areas of development in the defense and government electronics, space, information technology and technical services and support markets. Technical superiority, reputation, price, past performance, delivery schedules, financing and reliability are among the principal competitive factors considered by customers in these markets. Raytheon competes worldwide with a number of U.S. and international companies in these markets, some of which may have more extensive or more specialized engineering, manufacturing and marketing capabilities in some areas.

The on-going consolidation of the U.S. and global defense, space and aerospace industries continues to intensify competition and has reduced the number of principal prime contractors in the U.S. As a result of this consolidation, Raytheon frequently partners on various programs with its major suppliers, some of whom are, from time to time, competitors on other programs. For example, Lockheed Martin is not only a major competitor to Raytheon, it is also a customer/prime contractor and a business partner. Together, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon formed a joint venture to produce the Javelin Advanced Anti-tank Weapon System (a man-portable fire-and-forget weapon system used against enemy tanks, bunkers, buildings, small boats, and slow-moving helicopters).

Also, in 2001, Raytheon and Thales Group formed Thales-Raytheon Systems Co. Ltd. (TRS), a joint venture 50% owned by Raytheon and 50% by Thales Group. TRS is a system of systems integrator and provides fully customized solutions through the integration of command and control centers, radars, and communication networks. TRS has two major operating subsidiaries: (1) Thales-Raytheon Systems Co. LLC (TRS LLC), is controlled and consolidated by Raytheon and is a component of Raytheon's Network Centric Systems (NCS) segment; and (2) Thales-Raytheon Systems Company S.A.S. (TRS SAS) controlled by Thales Group.
