Research and development activities primarily include independent research and development (R&D) efforts related to government programs. R&D expenses are included in general and administrative expenses and are generally allocated to U.S. Government contracts.

In the years from 2008 to 2015, Northrop Grumman spent the following on R&D (company-funded):

2014: $569 million, or 2.4% of total revenues
2013: $507 million, or 2.1% of total revenues
2012: $520 million, or 2.1% of total revenues
2011: $543 million, or 2.1% of total revenues
2010: $603 million, or 1.7% of total revenues
2009: $610 million, or 1.8% of total revenues
2008: $564 million, or 1.7% of total revenues

*Note that the company spun-off its shipbuilding segment during 2011. The numbers from 2008 to 2010 include shipbuilding.
