United Technologies spends substantial amounts of its own funds on research and development.

In the years from 2008 to 2014, Untied Technologies spent the following on R&D activities (company-funded):
2014: $2,635 million, or 4.0% of total revenues
2013: $2,529 million, or 4.0% of total revenues
2012: $2,371 million, or 4.1% of total revenues
2011: $2,058 million, or 3.5% of total revenues
2010: $1,746 million, or 3.2% of total revenues
2009: $1,558 million, or 2.9% of total revenues
2008: $1,771 million, or 4.0% of total revenues

These expenditures are charged to expense as incurred.

United Technologies also performs research and development work under contracts funded by the U.S. government and other customers. This contract research and development, which is performed in the company's aerospace businesses, amounted to $2.4 billion in 2014, $2.1 billion in 2013, $1.7 billion in 2012, $1.9 billion in 2011, as compared to $2.0 billion in 2010 and $2.1 billion in 2009. These contract research and development costs include amounts that are expensed as incurred, through cost of products sold, and amounts that are capitalized into inventory to be subsequently recovered through production shipments.
